The Icehouse

Once I could always hear the bees in the sun
or the birds in the trees at dawn
and once it was the neighbours,
but mostly it was us
Now I can’t hear anything anymore
For the roar of the silence in this house.
Once a glance was all it took
You know the look
But now all that would fall on blind eyes
And this is how it’s going to be
seems you can’t stand the sight of me
And I can’t stand the silence in this house
You said I looked so lovely once that you had to look away
in the days when you shouldn’t have been looking my way, anyway
Now all you do is look away
And all I do is sigh and cry and pray for singing in this house
Amen, singing again in this house.

Wise Eyes Wide
05:33
|
|||
i was doing fine, oh me, oh mine
i was, i was doing fine
then someone got out some pictures of some party in the summer
and you shone from every one
like you were a prize and i was the winner
and your idle eyes
i still idolize
well i took a deep breath
i didn’t take a deep enough breath
you’re still there, blue and beautiful
and i’d love to play cool at you
damn you, make a fool of you
but your lying eyes
i still lionize
i long to feel your kiss across my back again
and i long to kiss my way across your back again
your long back
i long to come back
and your idle eyes, i still idolize
and your lying eyes, i still lionize
and your wide eyes, still hide your cries
still hide your cries

A prince took off his ermine,
laid it in a fold
and despite the time of the small sun,
He said he felt no cold
But he looked alot like pain itself
and doubted what he sang;
but he kept his crown and his glory
tho he held them on with his hand
And tho many would kiss his hand
and vow he to be king,
the prince was wan and hungry
for more than meat and drink
And he came this way for solace
and he came this way for song
and I knew, I knew
he was not wrong
He said 'Tis my sorrow sorest
Woe the falling forest
The north wind brings me no rest
And death is in the sky
And he looked alot like pain itself
and doubted what he sang;
but he kept his crown and his glory
tho he held them on with both hands

The Boatman
03:20
|
|||
there was a man lived on the shore
he had a boat moored by
and when the waters rose, he’d go to that boat
and lie back and watch the sky
and tho that boat rarely set sail
he liked how it would drift
tethered by its mooring
on the water’s lift
and his love called to him from the shore
she tried crying and she tried laughing
and he’d hear her
but was listening to the water lapping
and she didn’t want a sailor or a boatman for a lover
and she didn’t want a god or a philosopher
just someone who knew where home was
who could look her in the eye
and stand tall in the storm and not falter
